Inside Out – Akaroa House & Garden Tour 2016 a look into Akaroa’s finest heritage cottages, gardens and homes.

Most of us will admit to having driven past a beautiful old Akaroa cottage or an exclusive B & B thinking ‘I would love to sneak in and have a look at that property’. Well now you can – on the Akaroa House & Garden tour.

The biennial ‘Inside Out’ Akaroa House and Garden Tour is being held on 26-27 November with 15 local properties on show – some old favourites and some stunning new properties welcoming visitors for the very first time. It’s the perfect excuse to spend the weekend in Akaroa, enjoying the food, wine and hospitality – and getting a rare glimpse into other people’s backyards, front yards and homes.

On this year’s House and Garden Tour we are thrilled to be able to profile some heritage Akaroa cottages that have not been open to the public before. They have been beautifully renovated and the owners are generously opening them up for the tour. Akaroa and the surrounding bays provide the perfect backdrop for gardens bursting with lavender, roses, native and exotic trees, fruit and nut orchards, vineyards and birdsong. It’s a privilege to be offered a glimpse into these environments and testament to the hard work and dedication of the property owners.

Among the highlights of this year’s tour is ‘All Season’s’ cottage which was originally the Akaroa Borough Council Office building, built in 1896 and situated west of the Customhouse near Daly’s Wharf. It was moved to its current site in 1967 and is now a welcoming family holiday cottage. Also open on the tour which will delight many, is ‘Banksia Cottage’. The cottage was built in 1858 and was home to Jessie Mould from 1967 until 2001. Bronwyn Thoms (interior designer) purchased it in 2011 and has now fully restored the cottage, while retaining the integrity of the building. Don’t miss this opportunity to see inside and experience these cottages and a piece of Akaroa’s history opening for the first time to the public.

Close by ‘Banksia Cottage’ is ‘Akaroa FyrneBrook House’ which is tucked away in a beautiful park-like garden filled with old world & modern Roses, Rhododendrons, ornamental & native trees and perennials all nestled between Balguerie Stream & native bush.

For those with a thirst for fine wine, then don’t miss the chance to visit Heidi and Tim Herbert’s Valley Road Vineyard. The landscaped grounds lead into the vineyard which spreads down the hill towards the harbour. A highlight of this property is the straw-bale home and a hidden waterfall nestled behind the vines.

Across the road in French Farm is the garden of Jendy & Pat Brooks, a large informal country garden nestled in the beautiful valley. Open all weekend will be ‘The Potting Shed’-a colourful garden shop selling NZ Studio Pottery and other quality goodies.
Take the scenic drive out to the Simpsons garden high above Fisherman’s Bay and you will be rewarded with one of Banks Peninsula’s top gardens. Set against stunning Pacific Ocean vistas this two-hectare garden blends native with non-native plants to create a truly New Zealand garden.

This is a small selection of the 15 wonderful and varied properties that will be open on the weekend.

The House and Garden Tour is a highlight on our events calendar and a great opportunity for locals and visitors to experience our rich natural and built heritage. It’s just such an amazing way to experience the town and surrounds – offering a taste of our fabulous produce and wines, a close-up view of some of the most beautiful gardens and homes in the region and the chance to meet and talk with the people who care for and create such amazing environments.

The Inside Out House and Garden Tour will be held on 26 and 27 November.
Most gardens will be open from 10am-5pm all weekend.
