Screening as part of Censored - 100 Years of Film Censorship in New Zealand.

In August 1916 the Cinematograph Film Censorship Act was passed, making it illegal to show any film in New Zealand without it first being passed by the Censor. To commemorate 100 years of censorship in New Zealand Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision is showing a number of films that were banned in New Zealand on their initial release, as well as hosting public events that examine the history of film censorship in New Zealand and the challenge of censorship in today's digital age.

"'Mad Max' is a 1979 Australian dystopian action film… The film presents a tale of societal collapse, murder, and vengeance set in a future Australia, in which a vengeful policeman becomes embroiled in a feud with a vicious motorcycle gang… The film initially received a polarized reception upon its release in April 1979, although it won three AACTA Awards and attracted a cult following, while its critical reputation has grown since. The film earned more than $100 million worldwide in gross revenue. It held the Guinness record for most profitable film from 1980-1999 and has been credited for further opening up the global market to Australian New Wave films." – Wikipedia entry

A cult hit that went on to become one of the most profitable films of all time, as well as launch the career of Mel Gibson. The film was banned on its release in 1979 because of objectionable content. This was upheld in 1981, and was not passed for release until April 1983 when it received an R18 rating; this was just over a year after its sequel 'Mad Max 2' was passed with an R16 rating in March 1982. An example of censorship due to objectionable content.
