Musicianship & Singing Skills with Nikki Berry and Gary Easterbrook.

A course for everyone who wants to develop their singing and musicianship skills while also developing musical literacy. Although reading music isn't necessary to be a good singer, a lot of the skills developed while learning to read are also the skills needed to develop an accurate pitch and a good sense of your key centre. Through fun and accessible activities, we will build skills and confidence in the various elements of music. The day is based on activities that work well with younger people. "Why should the pre-schoolers have all the fun?" This course is suitable for adults and children aged about 12 and over.

The course covers:
- Sequencing skills - (singing melodies accurately)
- Understanding, singing and reading rhythm and pitch
- Musicianship - expressing the elements of music effectively
- Basic harmony singing - working out your own harmonies
- Lots and lots of fun singing together
- Vocal coaching where required
- Tips and reminders for freeing up the voice

The Tutors:
Nikki Berry's background is as a songwriter and she is a trained audio engineer. She conducts the exuberant world music choir, A Capellago, and the Open Song world music choir. Nikki has trained in the Orff and Kodàly approach. She loves to improvise, compose and arrange music and has led workshops for singers and musicians of all ages and experience for many years.

Gary Easterbrook grew up in Whangarei and has flown airplanes, driven trucks, worked in forestry, flirted with television... the list goes on. His musical career has been equally varied - from heavy rock to bluegrass and country, blues and jazz to world music. He learned piano as an eleven-year-old, took up guitar at fourteen, then bass guitar and back to piano (with a dabble on drums along the way). He's now happy with all these instruments, and also arranges music for choirs. Besides music, Gary loves surfing, sea kayaking and photography.

This course draws on their combined experience over many years of teaching & playing and especially draws on their work with young people. Guest tutors will also run workshops on a range of topics.
