My Journey features artworks created by the children of prisoners in Canterbury, supported and encouraged by volunteer mentors from the charity Pillars. The exhibition marks the annual Children of Prisoners Week run by Pillars, an organisation which supports children of prisoners in our community.

The artworks in My Journey were created by children aged six to 16 years who are part of Pillars’ mentoring programme. The children were supported by their volunteer mentors to produce the prints using a wood cutting process. The pictures illustrate things the children value and the people who are walking with them on their life journey.

Local artist and printmaker Josh Bashford facilitated a workshop with the children and their mentors to create the artworks. Of Pakeha and Samoan descent, Josh’s work commonly features motifs inspired by landscapes around his home at Little River on Banks Peninsula.

On any given day in New Zealand, there are an estimated 20,000 children with at least one parent who has been sentenced to a term in prison. Without proper support, these children are more than 9 times more likely than other New Zealand children to go to prison as adults.

More information about Pillars and its mentoring programme can be found at the website. #notourfutureprisoners
