Dundas Street Sessions # 1:
In the first of an occasional series Dunedin’s premier acoustic music venue 50Dundas presents the internationally acclaimed songwriter and performer Nadia Reid in a special concert.

Nadia Reid:
Nadia Reid has just returned from a successful 3 month tour of Australia, Malaysia and European and we wanted to grab her to open our concert series before she head off again.

Nadia’s album Listen to Formation, Look for the Signs has been received with acclaim throughout the world. The influential website Pitchfork says the album “is a soothing, folky Americana album that recalls the work of Laura Marling, Gillian Welch, Hope Sandoval, and Nina Nastasia.”

Mojo magazine called it an “inspired debut by a young New Zealand singer-songwriter you'll feel you've known forever.”

Laura Barton in the Guardian also made the connection with Laura Marling and Gillian Welch giving the album four stars. “When I hear a young artist making an album as soulful and rich and self-possessed as Listen To Formation, Look For The Signs I feel so thrilled not only for the existence of that record but for all the music they will make over all the years to come”.

The Song’s The Thing:
We set out to create memorable musical events that featured great songwriting. The concept was to invite recognised and celebrated songwriters to headline concerts and showcase the breadth of their talents.

As part of the concert we decided select local songwriters whose work has caught our eye and who, we feel, deserve a wider audience.

We wanted to keep the focus on songwriting and we’re trying out something a little different. In the first half of the concert Mike Moroney and Pam Morrison will share the stage and swap songs and talk about them.

Mike Moroney is a respected local musician. He has been associated with a number of significant local groups including the popular ‘cowboy lounge’ quartet The Chaps and his duo with Anna Bowen Catgut and Steel. His songs have featured on albums by The Chaps and he has recently been in the studio recording an album of his own songs with Catgut and Steel.

Pam Morrison was a member of the highly respected a capella group Asis who performed some of her compositions. She likes to compose songs for special occasions and the results are often moving and full of grace. She has recently undertaken a songwriting workshop with the respected Scottish singer Karine Polwart.
