In our second ‘Masterworks’ series, Maestro de Waart and the NZSO look to the giants of the Romantic repertoire with the music of Beethoven and Brahms.

Nicola Benedetti, who last captivated New Zealand audiences in 2012, returns to perform Brahms’ divinely lyrical Double Concerto for Violin and Cello. Joining her is the cellist Leonard Elschenbroich, whose intuitive, physical style has earned a loyal international following. Having known each other since they were students, they bring an intimacy to Brahms’ yearning melodies that will warm our hearts.

Another cornerstone of the orchestral repertoire must be Beethoven’s dramatic Symphony No. 3. The ‘Eroica’ stands testament against tyranny with music that is powerful and undoubtedly heroic.

Celebrating this new musical relationship between conductor and orchestra, we start, however, with another work of compelling optimism – the Festival Overture from our own great, Douglas Lilburn.
