Mozart Horn Concerto No.4 in E-flat Major
Mozart Symphony No.40 in G Minor

Concert duration: Approx. 1 hr 30 min

As we continue our Masterworks series, Edo de Waart turns his attention to two titans of the orchestral repertoire, Mozart and Haydn.

A critic from the premiere of Haydn’s Symphony No. 100, the ‘Military’, described its pictorial second movement in particularly vivid terms, hearing ‘the hellish roar of war increased to a climax of horrid sublimity!’ This symphony, tempered by the refinements of the eighteenth century, continues to delight and surprise modern audiences.

Such sublime music is also the hallmark of Haydn’s contemporary, Mozart, and we welcome the return of Samuel Jacobs to perform the glorious Horn Concerto No. 4. This bright and cheerful concerto is perfectly balanced, allowing an audience to bask in the soft lyricism of Jacobs’ playing.

Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 with its famous opening movement is, of course, one of the best-known pieces in the repertoire. Dramatic, mysterious and emotionally complex, it is little wonder this work is simply called ‘the Great’.
