We welcome back to the NZSO the Peruvian maestro and master of colour, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, in this sumptuous programme of lush exoticism.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s fantastical Scheherazade has remained a firm favourite since its 1888 premiere. Distilling the stories from 1001 Arabian Nights into an orchestral fantasy, the composer’s kaleidoscopic orchestral textures continue to entrance us in waves of glittering sound.

Joining the orchestra to perform Lalo’s Cello Concerto is Johannes Moser. Hailed by Gramophone Magazine as ‘one of the finest amongst the astonishing gallery of young virtuoso cellists’, his passionate style will revel in the Spanish melodies that sing forth from Lalo’s exuberant score.

Irresistible gypsy dances form the foundation of Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály’s works. Having travelled through numerous small Hungarian and Czech villages during his childhood, the songs of the Magyar people inspired one of his most lyrical works, the seductive Dances of Galánta.
