In a fitting finale to Auckland Museum’s Lantern Festival programme, New Zealand’s leading piano trio NZTrio present Spirit of Chimes.

NZTrio will guide you through a treasure trove of music from China and Aotearoa matched with large scale visual images of historical jade and pounamu artefacts unearthed from the Museum’s collections.

Critically acclaimed as ‘a national treasure’, NZTrio has been playing to audiences around the world for over a decade. Every NZTrio performance is an intimate, dynamic and engaging ride – sometimes calm and tranquil, sometimes wild and intense.

NZTrio often collaborates with international artists and toys with the borders between different cultures and genres. They smash preconceptions of classical music being 'stuffy' or 'intimidating' by presenting it in a fresh and approachable way, appealing to listeners from all walks of life. ‘Spirit of Chimes’ will see NZTrio performing the following works by these contemporary composers:

Gao Ping (China/NZ): Su Xie Si Ti
Claire Cowan (NZ): Subtle Dances
Zhou Long (China): Spirit of Chimes
Maurice Ravel: Piano Trio - Pantoum
Bright Sheng (China): Four Movements for Piano Trio
John Psathas (NZ): Tarantismo
