From open Roadstead Oamaru Harbour welcomed migrants, stock and building materials from the 1840s, then exported wool, grain and frozen meat direct to London as breakwater and wharves were built. From tents on the beach to Oamaru-stone buildings for merchants, bankers and millers the nearby streets grew rapidly.
