Installation of 1000 native and stitched leaves.

Come along to celebrate the cultural diversity of our wider community! Topophilia – Love of the Land is the result of The Leaf Stitch Project, an art based community project, facilitated by artist Birgit Moffatt. As part of the annual Matariki celebrations in the region, people were invited to participate by stitching onto a dry leaf, gathered from the local native bush. 1000 leaves have been stitched by members of the community during the month of June and they will be set up in an art installation in ‘new space’ at Mahara Gallery.

Moffatt wants to contribute to her community by providing a space for people to come together, connect with other people in the community, sharing and exchanging ideas. Topophilia is a collective artwork, which conveys community bonding through creative activity, which is characteristic of the Kāpiti Coast.
