David Melville will talk on what we know about the huge annual migration made by bar-tailed godwit and red knot; from NZ to their breeding areas in the Arctic Circle and back again for our summer season (including places like the Vernon Lagoons and Havelock estuary).

The distance they cover is so large that birds lose up to a third of their body weight. Wetland stopover points in Asia are critical for feeding but such sites are under severe pressure from developments and reclamations. However, recent inter-governmental agreements do offer hope for the future of these amazing birds.
