It will be a show of speed, muscle and skill at this weekend’s Pirongia Heavy Horse Shoeing Competition. The annual event will be taking place at Pirongia Clydesdales and will feature some of the country’s best farriers.

The event is one of a few annual open days held at the popular Pirongia attraction, and visitors will have the chance to see the three-man teams of farriers shaping hot steel into horseshoes, and fitting them to the Clydesdale horses. The competition is expected to attract some of the best farriers from across New Zealand who will compete against the clock and under the eye of an experienced judge.

Pirongia Clydesdales owner, Nick van der Sande, says most don’t get the chance to see how horseshoes are made these days with the advent of machine technology, so it’s a fantastic chance for the public to witness this age-old art, and the great skill that is involved.

He adds “The (shoeing) competition is a great opportunity for farriers to polish their shoemaking skills and benchmark with others in the industry. Competitions are important in keeping the industry standard at a high level, but also great learning experiences for young and emerging farriers.”

But farriers and Clydesdale horses are not the only attraction of the day. Visitors will be treated to an impressive display of pre-1963 American cars and hot rods, and pre-1966 British and American motorcycles thanks to the Royals Rumble classic car show. The on-site Coach House Country Café will also be open and serving delicious country meals and quality coffee.

The public is encouraged to bring the whole family for a unique and fun day out. Gold coin donations will be taken at the gate.
