Shakespeare’s Verse – Raymond Hawthorne
Shakespeare expressed his ideas in both prose and verse; the latter being a form that actors must connect with and appreciate, in order to purposefully realise the playwright's intentions. Using a range of sonnets, Raymond Hawthorne facilitates a workshop that covers Iambic Pentameter, imagery, essential communication between actors and the connection of thoughts and ideas.

Raymond is one of New Zealand’s most senior practitioners in the Performing Arts arena. In 1957 he was granted a NZ Government Bursary to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London (RADA). On his graduation from RADA in 1959 he pursued a career in the UK as a singer, actor and he remained in England for the next thirteen years, returning to RADA to teach and direct. Raymond returned to New Zealand in 1971 and joined the Mercury Theatre and within two years had instigated the formation of Theatre Corporate in Auckland. He was Director of Theatre Corporate for eight years until 1981. In 1992 he established his own acting studio, THE ACTOR’S SPACE. In November of 1997 he became the Head of Major in ‘Directing and Writing for Theatre and Screen’ at UNITEC School of Performing and Screen Arts. At the end of his six-year involvement, he was made Head of School. Raymond now freelances as an Actor/ Director/ Tutor. In the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2000 Raymond was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (O.N.Z.M.) for services to the theatre.

Pop-up Globe Auckland is a full-scale working temporary replica of the second Globe Theatre originally built by Shakespeare and his company in 1614, the result of ground-breaking international academic research. With a steel frame ‘skinned’ in plywood the Pop-up Globe fuses cutting-edge scaffold technology with 400-year-old designs and superb contemporary performances to create an immersive 360 degree experience unlike any other.

Capacity is limited and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, so book your tickets now. Please wear appropriate, comfortable clothing for the workshops.
