A global ground-breaking street art project is coming to Napier that will transform many of the city’s unused walls into extraordinary works of art.

International nonprofit, the PangeaSeed Foundation, in partnership with the Napier City Council, is bringing the festival Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans to Napier in March.

This is the first time that PangeaSeed, which raises awareness about the plight of the ocean through art, has brought a Sea Walls festival to New Zealand, after producing Sea Walls festivals in Los Angeles, Vietnam, Mexico and Sri Lanka.

Each of the artists will be assigned a wall in the Napier CBD or Ahuriri and paint a mural in their own style and aesthetic - a live art performance that will be sure to attract crowds.

The city is going to become a hive of activity throughout the ten days of the festival, with live art demonstrations, a pop-up exhibition, and an open-air film festival that will feature the World Oceans Day Film Festival films and some of PangeaSeed’s documentaries.

The festival will open on Friday, March 11 at 5pm with a powhiri welcoming the artists on the long lawn by the Napier Soundshell. After the powhiri there will be a live spray-painting demonstration at the Napier Night Fiesta. The public will be able to see the artists painting their murals around the city between March 14 and 18.

The end result will be an eclectic collection of stunning, thought-provoking public art works that can be appreciated by anyone who walks along Napier’s streets.

The artists will be announced soon.
