A Manawatū story told through music and images of the 400-year-old tunnel to Spain and features historic images sourced from Manawatū Heritage.

“A deft combination of Western art and traditional Maori music performed with great sensitivity and authority." - Manawatu Standard, August 2016

Our intriguing story, told through music, begins with a tohunga discovering sounds emanating from a hole in the ground. Throughout the performance, It becomes apparent that the sounds are coming through a tunnel from Spain, from the opposite side of the world. Our story celebrates intertwined cultural and musical traditions - Māori music, Spanish 'early music' and new New Zealand art music - while depicting a change in environment, including the loss of the huia.

Music by Pepe Becker (new work, 'Ciento Ochenta'), Henry Purcell, Tomas Luis de Victoria and improvisations.

Texts by poets Apirana Taylor, Leonel Alvarado and Pepe Becker
Artworks by Reweti Arapere
