Join Rotorua Museums lead exhibitions curator for an insightful talk on The Art and Life of Walter Bakkenes, Thursday 3 November 2016 at 5:30pm.

The exhibition Inner Worlds: The Art and Life of Walter Bakkenes is the first retrospective exhibition of Dutch immigrant artist Walter Bakkenes (1920 – 1986), and lead exhibitions curator Ane Tonga will guide you through its diverse range of artworks, ephemera and sketches that reflect his fascinating life.

Ane Tonga is the recently appointed lead exhibitions Curator at Rotorua Museum Te Whare Taonga o Te Arawa and has held curatorial roles at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, City Gallery Wellington and the Dowse Art Museum. She is also a practising artist and writer who has published for Art New Zealand and written for prolific artists including Fiona Pardington, Janet Lilo and Lonnie Hutchinson.

As lead curator of the exhibition, Ane’s insight into Bakkenes work is invaluable and provides a window into his life and artistic practise. Dutch-born, Bakkenes arrived in Rotorua in 1952 amidst a wave of Dutch immigrants and joined celebrated artists such as Theo Schoon and Zoe Ireland who came to define Rotorua as a hotbed of the growing modernist tradition in Aotearoa.

Bakkenes drew inspiration from his new surroundings and the exhibition includes pieces which reflect this practice. Inner Worlds: The Art and Life of Walter Bakkenes is currently on display until 27 November 2016, alongside fellow Dutch artist Rembrandt, in Rembrandt Remastered on until 20 November 2016.
