This exhibition showcases the unique visual identity of the iconic '80s band, The Smiths.

“From the beginning, all the artwork was conceived and controlled by Morrissey, whose instinct for presentation was unerring. With a sensualist’s eye for colour and line, he explored the complexities of visualisation; from a hoard of assembled images came the inspiration for each new design.” - Jo Slee (Morrissey’s personal assistant)

In a time when excess, big hair and bold, bright colours adorned the cover of most pop-rock albums, The Smiths covers took the unusual step of looking back at past icons and presenting them to the world in glorious mono-tone.

Each new release drew the public further into Morrissey’s head. Where else would you find Elvis Presley adorn one single and have the next feature Andy Warhol’s star, Candy Darling.

The Smiths: The Art Of, collects all the original promotional posters for the iconic '80s Manchester band, The Smiths.

This collection has been a labour of love for Smiths and Morrissey devotee, Mark Catley who is proud to present his collection to the public. Not only will this be the first time an event like this has been held in New Zealand, but also the southern hemisphere.

The last Saturday of the exhibition Space Academy will hold a special ‘Smiths’ night featuring DJ’s playing The Smiths along with music influenced by and from the band.
