All aboard for a nautical Third Thursday that’s full to the gunwales.

We’re taking inspiration from the stunning works of Frank Barnes, who painted many of the magnificent ships that sailed into Wellington Harbour during the 20th Century for April’s Third Thursday – The Sea and The Shepherd.

Take some time to admire the two dozen Barnes paintings on display in The Attic, many painted from Barnes’ hut on Orongorongo Station near Palliser Bay. Once you’re completely inspired, emulate Frank by painting on pebbles – one of his many mediums for his art – with the Inverlochy Art School.

Join the Tim Skinner of the Maritime Friends of Wellington to look at the changing technology of ships entering our harbour in ‘From Sail to Steam’.

Get jolly and join in on some rollicking tunes with the Wellington Sea Shanty Society, performing traditional sea songs from around the world, including Aotearoa, France, Spain, United Kingdom and beyond.

And if all this seafaring fun leaves you hungry, you can satisfy your belly with tasty snacks for seafarers and landlubbers from The Hungry Monkey.

When: Thursday 21 April from 6pm

Where: Wellington Museum, Jervois Quay

Price: Entry by koha, refreshments additional
