West Auckland photographer Edith Amituanai showcases a series of documentary photographs from Henderson to Avondale to launch the opening weekend of Urbanesia 2016.

Jump on the train with the artist and local youth from west Auckland for an art-filled early evening adventure. On your journey, you will encounter pop-up performances, art and music, whether it’s on the street, on the train or at your destination point. The adventure continues at Avondale’s All Goods Gallery, where there will be a free poster exhibition, local music, food and performance pieces for all to enjoy.

Edith Amituanai is one of Auckland’s most celebrated artists, being the first artist of Pacific descent to be nominated for the esteemed Walters Prize. Stories of migration are prominent in her work. The group of travelling youth come from around the local Henderson and Ranui area where Edith lives and actively engages as a community mentor, friend and artist.

The group of travellers will meet on the eastbound platform at 5.30pm, for the 6pm train to Avondale.

Urban Legends endeavours to create meaningful connections through the activation of urban spaces using advertising, transport, performance, art, dance and music.

Urbanesia expresses Auckland’s unique and diverse urban Pacific identity through a vibrant festival of contemporary Pacific arts across three weekends in November.

This event is presented by Janet Lilo and Whau the People.
