Commemorate the 48th anniversary of the Wahine disaster at Wellington Museum.

Wellington Museum is remembering those lost, those who helped, and those who survived the Wahine Disaster.

The sinking of the Lyttelton–Wellington ferry Wahine on 10 April 1968 was New Zealand’s worst modern maritime disaster. In memoriam of the 52 people who lost their lives, a wreath will be laid on the maritime floor of the Museum. Bells will also be rung half hourly, and a series of films played in the Wahine Gallery on the first floor.

A trio of midday talks will look at the meteorological impact and changes since the sinking:

11:30am: The Wahine Disaster storm: why was it so severe?

12:30pm: How have storms and weather patterns changed in the past 48 years?

1:30pm: Climate Change and its expected effect on weather patterns in the future.

All talks last 35 minutes including a question and answer session at the end of each talk.

When: Sunday 10 April from 10am

Where: Wellington Museum, Jervois Quay

Price: Free entry
