Ensuring unity through music continues.

Wairua Sinfonietta presents an enticing mix of famous classics with something a little less well known – but no less entertaining – at its Winter Soirée Fundraiser Concert on Saturday.

Mozart’s delightful Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Mascagni’s famous Intermezzo from ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’, and Ravel’s haunting Pavane pour une infant défunte complement Italian composer Bottesini’s Passione Amorosa for two double bass soloists. Botessini was widely acclaimed in his time as the Paganini of the double bass, championing the versatility of the instrument, which is to be showcased by two of the leading double bassists in New Zealand – Matthew Cave of New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) and Evgueni Lanchtchikov of Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Conductor Elizabeth Lau – also a double bassist – is thrilled to work with her colleagues in a work that’s close to her heart. “This passionate Gran Duo brings out the best in the instrument, such a rich range of colour and texture that show the versatility of the double bass, which is so often overlooked as solo instrument.”

Wairua Sinfonietta also performs New Zealand composer David Farquar’s Ring Around the Moon: A Waltz Suite of dances originally written to represent dancing at a ball in a play of the same name. Wairua Sinfonietta is proud to welcome Assistant NZSO Concert Master Yuka Eguchi to its ranks as guest Concert Master.

Proceeds from Wairua Sinfonietta’s concerts are usually donated to charities – previous recipients have included The Hearing House, Heart Kids New Zealand, Te Rangi Marie Trust and the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre. However, proceeds from this concert will go the Wairua Sinfonietta’s own running costs – so that they can continue their important work in the community - bringing Unity Through Music and supporting many more worthy charities.
