A fascinating, moving and articulate snapshot of how the Treaty was viewed by Māori in 1977. A German subtitled version of this film was also made.

"Waitangi. The Story of a Treaty and Its Inheritors / Die Geschichte eines Vertrages und Seine Erben" (1977) includes footage of Waitangi Day celebrations at Waitangi attended by Governor General Sir Dennis Blundell and other government officials. Large numbers of Māori converge on the marae for the occasion. Merata Mita speaks with Te Riri Kawiti, whose ancestor was one of those who signed the Treaty. He recalls it was only a matter of six years after the Treaty signing that sovereignty over their lands was being eroded.

Merata also speaks with a Māori farmer, and experiences daily life on his farm.

Also discussed: rural to urban migration and the start of the Bastion Point occupation.
