There are limitless variations in the way artists translate their perspectives into art, resulting in work as unique as the maker. The diversity of subjects and styles in the sculptures on display illustrates this very individual nature of art-making, with each of the artists creating something tangible out of their own particular background, environment and inspirations.

In highlighting the work of Hawke’s Bay artists, this exhibition reveals not only the strength of sculpture in the region but also the vitality of the local creative networks. Many of these artists have worked, studied, collaborated and exhibited together, drawing invaluable support from each other in the development of their practices. And while broad in scope, the exhibition represents only part of the extensive sculptural scene in Hawke’s Bay.

Through an eclectic array of artworks, What We Make of It celebrates these 14 artists and what they make of the world around them.
