The Opawa Zendo holds four zen meditation sessions each week - on Monday and Wednesday mornings, and on Tuesday and Sunday evenings. Instruction in zen meditation is available on Tuesday evenings from 6.50pm by appointment. This instruction provides newcomers with an orientation to the Zen Buddhist tradition, to the practice of zazen (seated zen meditation), and to the resources and retreats offered by the Opawa Zendo.

It is necessary to receive instruction in zazen before taking part in the regular weekly schedule of practice. If you would like to schedule a time for beginner instruction, please contact Geoff on 021 238 4618 or

There is no charge for attending zazen at the zendo, although a gold coin donation towards the upkeep of the building is appreciated.

We are open to people of all cultural, ethnic, gender and religious backgrounds who have an interest in pursuing Zen Buddhist meditation.

Regular events:
Along with the weekly meditation schedule, Christchurch zen practitioners take part in monthly half-day or full day Sunday sits (zazen kai). Zazenkai often includes a Skype-based discussion with one of our Zen teachers located in the USA. These discussions help practitioners of all levels of experience to clarify their understanding of zen practice and how it relates to their lives. Please visit our website to learn more about the range of activities offered at the Opawa Zendo.

In addition to the schedule of Zen practice, the Opawa Zendo hosts weekly classes in Feldenkrais, Tai Chi, yoga and Insight Meditation.
