Renowned Sicilian Artist & Sculptor Alex Caminiti is coming to New Zealand to take up his residency at Kaan Zamaan Gallery Kerikeri.

Local kaumatua and Kura will officially welcome Mr Caminiti to Kerikeri Sunday 29th January with a powhiri. This is Caminiti’s first trip to New Zealand, we are indeed incredibly privileged to be hosting this world-class artist in the Far north.

February 18 & 19 Caminiti will run a workshop entitled “Taonga Detriti: Caminiti (debris treasure with Caminiti ) at Kaan Zamaan. Ten special Northland children between the ages of 10 - 15 years of age will be selected to participate in a weekend workshop with the artist, the theme and emphasis of which will be recycling unwanted waste to create new artwork. Mr Caminiti, himself an orphan, will join the children and support team on Ti Tii marae for the weekend.

Caminiti has done similar workshops in American and elsewhere.

Bald Angels Charitable Trust are sourcing the appropriate children though Plunket, Te Hau Ora O Ngapui social services, educators, Woman’s refuge and are sponsoring the workshop. Volunteers will make up a support team to help with caring/feeding/entertaining the children after workshop hours.

Italians in our community are helping with translating, local musicians and the general public will be able to see the workshop in progress on Hobson Avenue.

Two other workshops for paying adults will also take place at the gallery on the weekends of 11 & 25 February.

Caminiti’s Exhibition will open Saturday 4th February, 11am - 2pm, come welcome this distinguished visitor we have as our guest for the month of February.
