Art at Home, Frances Hodgkins & the Field Family represents a small part of the fascinating but little-known story of the relationship between the Field family, a founding family of modern Waikanae, and New Zealand’s most famous expatriate artist, Frances Hodgkins.

She was born in Dunedin in 1869 and left for Europe in 1901, where she subsequently made her name as a leading artist in British modernism. She died in England in 1947 and her ashes were later returned to New Zealand and are interred with her older sister Isabel Field, also an artist, and mother Rachel Hodgkins in a shared plot with other family in Waikanae Cemetery on Ngarara Road, site of one of the Field family farms.
