Hanslip Plays Mozart - Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra

Thu 23 Feb 2017, 7:30pm

Where: Auckland Town Hall - Great Hall, 303 Queen St, CBD, Auckland

Restrictions: All Ages

Conductor: Giordano Bellincampi
Violin Chloe Hanslip

- Haydn Symphony No.21
- Mozart Violin Concerto No.5
- Brahms Symphony No.2

It’s been called ‘Brahms’ Pastoral Symphony’ and with good reason. Composing his first symphony was a titanic struggle, but when Brahms set to writing he found this uncomplicatedly happy piece flowing easily onto the manuscript: it’s music of a relaxed summer, out-of-doors in the high hills.

Haydn’s early symphony is decidedly unconventional. Reversing the normal order, its first movement is slow, almost dreamy, before a whip-cracking second movement. The surprises in the finale keep everyone on their toes. There are surprises in Mozart’s champagne concerto, too, whose third movement is interrupted by an unexpected burst of Turkish music.

Free organ recital.

The Auckland Town Hall Organ Trust, in association with the APO, presents a 30-minute recital at 6pm prior to each Bayleys Great Classics concert in Auckland Town Hall. Each recital features a different organist playing classics from the organ repertoire.
