Applications for The Big Play In, a unique opportunity to play alongside the full Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO), were coerced into early closure this year due to the extraordinary amount of entries; places were swiftly snapped up by aspiring young musicians eager to take advantage of this privileged occasion.

Successful student entrants from the School of Music, the University of Auckland, players from Auckland Youth Orchestra, and advanced secondary school music students will be paired one-on-one with APO musicians, for the ultimate mentoring experience, during which they will receive valuable feedback from their partner APO musician and direction from conductor Toby Thatcher. The intensive closed-doors workshop concludes with a proud performance to friends and families of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique.

This is one of the most popular events of the Inspire Partnership Programme – APO’s unique partnership with the School of Music, the University of Auckland dedicated to nurturing talent in aspiring young musicians.

Hector Berlioz
Symphonie fantastique, H.48 (1830)

- I. Rêveries – Passions. Largo – Allegro agitato e appassionato assai – Religiosamente
- II. Un bal. Valse. Allegro non troppo
- IV. Marche au supplice. Allegretto non troppo
- V. Songe d’une nuit de sabbat. Larghetto – Allegro

N.B. Online registrations will close 3 hours prior to each event start time. Registrations are highly recommended due to the venue capacity restrictions. Entry to this event will be via the Aotea Square public entrance only, not the Queen Street entrance.

This event is part of the Schoool of Music Festival - a fourteen-day celebration of music at the University of Auckland. The Festival will showcase the School's diverse musical life and give an insight into the day-to-day life of students and staff.
