Auckland Symphony Orchestra's Free Family Concert series returns for 2017 and we begin with "ENIGMA' - a programme of contrasting characters and evocative sounds.

Starting here in Middle Earth with a symphony inspired by the Lord of the Rings, journey with us to the Cuban-inspired dance halls of Veracruz, Mexico, before being whisked away by gypsy airs. We'll be joined by 16-year-old Whangarei local, Maia-Dean Martin, who will perform the classic violin virtuosic piece, Ziguenerweisen.

At the centre of the programme is Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations. Quirky, contrasting and colourful, each variation portrays a different character inspired by friends and acquaintances of Elgar, with the final variation being a self-portrait. All the variations are tied together by an unassuming theme. However, to this day, it remains a mystery - an enigma only Elgar knows.

Donations appreciated.
Doors open at 2pm.
No interval - approximately 80 minutes.

This programme is also being performed at the Bruce Mason Centre on Sunday 30 April, 2:30pm.
