‘Balls, Bullets & Boots, from rugby field to battlefield’ is a unique WWI commemorative exhibition that tackles the story of wartime rugby.

The life stories featured in the exhibition aim to encapsulate the range of wartime experiences Kiwis 100 years ago would have had. The fifteen rugby players and coach were brought together through their love of rugby and their selection for the exhibition ‘XVI’.

Meet a pioneering woman coach, three pre-war All Black and three post-war All Blacks, a schoolboy rugby player-cum-soldier, and a rugby-mad military defaulter. You will also meet rugby players who served in the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and New Zealand Tunnelling Company, three NZ Maori players, and a highly decorated winner of the Victoria Cross who had a stellar pre-war provincial rugby career.

Visitors enter the exhibition through the stylised walls of a 1914 changing room before they meet their on-screen guide, Anton Oliver a former All Black. Anton takes you through an immersive graphics-backed space where audio, film, artefact and lighting provides the visitor with a multi-media journey from the rugby fields of home to the battlefields and back again to a country and lives changed forever by the shadow of war.

This exhibition is family friendly and ideally suited for ages 10+
This exhibition runs from 6th June until 22nd July 2017.
