“On the Road to Damascus” is an exhibition of quilts of 6 veteran Christchurch stitchers who have eschewed the trappings of modern day quilt-making and worked with the simplest of tools and recycled or scrap materials. Only natural dyes, sourced from the local environment have been used, ie onion skins, leaves, etc. All construction and quilting has been done by hand. The only tools that have been used are scissors, needles, pins and a straight edge.

The aim of this exhibition is to work in a way that is environmentally friendly, and lets the quilt reflect the life and unique viewpoint of the quiltmaker. It values slow quilt making as a quiet, contemplative activity that allows for thought and reflection in a chaotic world. It is not about shopping, fabric stashes, or making quilts as fast as possible with barely touching the material.

The quilt is only as important as the process the quiltmaker went through to make it. Each quilt will be accompanied by its story and the thoughts of the maker.

This exhibition is complementary to Creative Construction - A Story in Textiles being held 5 to 10 October at The Great Hall, The RSA, The Piano and St Andrews College.
