Artist Caro Williams’ sound installation of birdsong taken from Fort Takapuna Historic Reserve, Auckland comes together with recordings made at the Bulford Kiwi on Salisbury Plain during her recent artist residency.

Here the giant image of a Kiwi remains etched into the hillside carved into the chalk by NZ troops impatient to return home at the end of the First World War.

Williams has linked the military landscapes of both countries through intertwining birdsong punctuated by a Morse code transmission of a WW1 poem. The installation seeks to create a sense of place, a convergence of two distant lands bound by personal narratives and shared history.

Call and Response was initially presented in the gardens of the Rifles museum at the 2016 Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival. “…I am immensely proud of the work you created for the gardens, the quiet power of its message...” Toby Smith, Salisbury International Arts Festival Director.

Call and Response continues touring nationally and internationally during 2017-2018 as part of the Cicatrix International Cultural Exchange Project developed through the support of Creative New Zealand World War 1 Centenary (WW100) Co-commissioning Fund, Arts Council England, Wiltshire Council and is affiliated to: First World War Centenary Partnership, Imperial War Museum.

Artist Caro Williams will be presenting her WW1 commemorative sound installation, Call and Response.

Call and Response is supported by Creative New Zealand World War 1 Centenary (WW100) Co-commissioning Fund.
