Waiheke Choral Society, Kaleidoscope Performance, and guests will perform Carl Orff's Carmina Burana in song and dance at Te Huruhi School Hall.

Carmina Burana, by Carl Orff, is one of the few classical compositions of the twentieth century whose success has rivalled both the popular music of its time and the great composers of earlier centuries.

The piece consists of twenty-five short movements, each based on a poem written in the eleventh century by the monks of the Beuern monastery. The topics of the poems are not exactly monastic, ranging from the fickleness of fortune to the pleasures of flirting, feasting, and drinking. One movement describes the roasting of a swan—from the swan's point of view.

Orff originally intended the piece to be a combination of choral cantata and dance, with the dancers reflecting the mood of each movement. Most performances, however, ignore the dance element and present the piece as a cantata only. We will present Carmina Burana in its original glory, with Kaleidoscope Performance supplying the choreography and Waiheke Island Choral Society and guests performing the cantata. This is a rare tribute to the breadth of talent available on our island.
