In World War One, nearly one man in every five in the New Zealand forces was killed.
Tens of thousands more were wounded or became sick.

Many were wounded more than once. Many died young. Many who lived on had their lives blighted.

'Wounded' is an audio-visual experience that will leave you moved.

Soldiers faced the horror of infection in the pre-antibiotic age. They came home with mental and physical scarring. Surgeons performed innovative surgery for those who suffered facial trauma—the forerunner of today’s plastic surgery. Medical care became industrialised to address the scale of injuries in World War One.

'Wounded' tells you servicepeople’s stories, in their words, using imagery and audio extracts read from their diaries and letters. This dynamic exhibition portrays the afflictions and hardships of soldiers, nurses and medical staff during the many conflicts in the Great War.

The Great War Exhibition is building on its world-class story by running a series of temporary exhibitions, 'Chapters of the Great War', created by Story Inc. an innovative New Zealand company which creates stunning exhibitions for local and international audiences. 'Wounded' is open until early July, followed by the next temporary exhibition, 'Patriotism and Opposition'.

Content may disturb young children.
