Ian Griffin is passionate about viewing the Aurora Australis, the Southern Lights.

Ian will explain his passion and the science behind the remarkable shapes and colours seen during Auroral displays. Ian will talk about the history of Aurora watching here in New Zealand and will showcase some of the images that he has obtained of the Aurora, both from New Zealand and from close to the Antarctic Circle during flights aboard SOFIA and the recent “Flight to the Lights” Air New Zealand Charter flight.

Doors open at 7:30 for 8pm start.

The Canterbury Astronomical Society (CAS) is one of the largest astronomical society in the South Island, with a membership of approximately 90 members. We meet on the third Tuesday of the month, you can find more details on joining the society at Canterbury Astronomical Society website.
