In 2017 the Orpheus Choir of Wellington is presenting two special concerts in the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul, featuring masterworks from the choral repertoire.

The first is Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, an exciting mixture of this beloved composer's musical-theatre characteristics. Included is music that Bernstein had cut from West Side Story, now set to three psalms in their original Hebrew, and numerous other psalms. The mood alternates between joyful exhilaration, moments of violent frenzy, and moving appeals for peace.

Also included in the programme is James MacMillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross. Widely regarded as one of MacMillan’s finest achievements, his Seven Last Words is a work of dramatic intensity. This cantata follows Christ’s final utterances at the Crucifixion. With its mysterious qualities and glowing tone in the soft, contemplative passages, to the agonising cries of human despair, this promises to be a genuinely moving experience in every way.

Joining us in concert on the organ will be Wellingtonian Thomas Gaynor. Currently based in New York completing his studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, we are thrilled to have him join us on stage!
