The first ever China Film Festival brings six new release feature movies to Dunedin’s stunning Regent Theatre. Discover new worlds, love new stories, safely travel to exotic locations over a long weekend.

Join special guests from Shanghai and around the country to enjoy cultural performances, speeches and entertainment in the Octagon from 6pm on Friday 31st March.

This is the first New Zealand event of a lasting relationship between New Zealand Film Commission and the Shanghai Art Film Festival. The programme includes:

Farewell My Concubine - Reading Cinema
This ancient tale of a Chinese emperor’s rise and fall and his doomed love for a beautiful woman. The film, starring famous Beijing opera artist Shang Changrong (74) and rising opera actress Shi Yihong, was shot as an opera and combines traditional Chinese culture with 3D technology.

IP Man 3
Ip Man 3 is a Hong Kong biographical martial arts film directed by Wilson Yip. It is the third in the Ip Man film series based on the life of the Wing Chun grandmaster Yip Man and features Donnie Yen reprising the title role. The film also stars Mike Tyson, and Yip Man's pupil Bruce Lee is portrayed by Danny Chan.

Soul Mate
Soul Mate is a 2016 Chinese romantic drama film directed by Derek Tsang and starring Zhou Dongyu and Ma Sichun. Soul Mate garnered the Best Actress award for both Zhou and Ma at the 53rd Golden Horse Awards.

Cock & Bull
Cock and Bull is a 2016 Chinese crime comedy-drama film directed by Cao Baoping and starring Liu Ye, Zhang Yi, Duan Bowen, Wang Ziwen, Tan Zhuo, Wang Yanhui, Yan Bei and Sun Lei. A widowed father and tow truck operator is given two days to clear his name of a murder he did not commit. Based on a true story.

Park Shanghai
Mostly shot on a building rooftop and featuring the blurry uniformity of the Shanghai skyline as a symbolically weighty backdrop, Park Shanghai is a beautifully bleak story, illustrating that no prizes are at the end of the tunnel for young people graduating to adulthood in Shanghai.

Time Raiders
Time Raiders is a 2016 Chinese fantasy-action-adventure film directed by Daniel Lee and starring Jing Boran and Luhan. Time Raiders stars Jing Boran, Lu Han, Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat, Ma Sichun, Wang Jingchun, Zhang Boyu and is directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Daniel Lee.
