Discover the history of Wellington's waterfront with Te Wharewaka o Pōneke.

Our tour begins at Te Wharewaka o Pōneke which is the cultural centre for Taranaki Whānui, the local Māori tribes, on the Wellington Waterfront.

Our staff will share stories focused around the Māori history of Wellington from the time of the Polynesian migration to New Zealand to the settlement of European colonists and to modern times. As well as describing the history of Wellington our guides will also touch on subjects such as Māori waka (Canoes), Environment, Arts and Culture and many others.
