An exciting and vibrant new exhibition by NZ/Tongan artist Dagmar Dyck opens this month.

Dagmar has broken away from some of her traditional imagery, moving into neo-expressionist realms following her experience working with fellow Tongan artist Tevita Latu.

“Untrained thoughts” is my attempt to retrace and regain a sense of that joy and abandonment I would feel as a 17-year-old in my school’s art room. Untrained thinking occurs when we are not deliberately focusing on something we want to manifest or experience”.

Dyck states… “The recent collaborations with other artists has seen my latest work morph into an
unexpected tack in my ongoing journey as an artist. I am currently seeking an uninhibited and intuitive
approach to my work…. As an art teacher and observing children paint I think, I like to paint like that… with such freedom and not labour so much on the what, the where, and the why…”

Dagmar is an influential role model for South Pacific students and in particular at One Tree Hill college, where she is revered. This new work is reflective of an almost underground movement of art world-wide and the influence of urban street art and neo-graffiti, which is now emerging in the mainstream market.

Something I have noticed young Polynesian artists seem to particularly relate to. Dagmar has also recently been selected to be included in a research role in the Ancient Futures Marsden Project to Europe in 2018.

Works in this exhibition include 3 large stunning canvases and a number of works on paper.

A show not to be missed, opens with a preview on Tuesday 14th November and is on view until 2nd December 2017.
