Dancing words: When you do dance, I wish you a wave o’ th’ sea, that you might ever do nothing but that… - (William Shakespeare).

Dance writers often use metaphors to capture the mercurial aspects of dance and to recall the impact of ephemeral performances. Writings by Domenico da Piacenza, William Shakespeare, Kellom Tomlinson, Helen Keller, Edwin Denby, Joan Acocella, Arapeta Awatere, Hone Tuwhare and Douglas Wright are illustrative to this.

In this course, you will consider how such writings might help to shape your anticipation of the forthcoming Royal New Zealand Ballet season of Roland Petit’s Carmen, in the first production here of his landmark choreography from 1949.

This is an opportunity to enhance your choreographic appreciation and enjoyment of attending a live performance.

Participants enrolled in this course receive a 10% discount on tickets for the Royal New Zealand Ballet performance of Carmen on Wednesday 22 March. You can enrol for just the course ($70) or for the course plus a reduced-price ticket ($70 + $58.50 = $128.50). You will receive your ticket at the course.

Target audience:
This course is for anyone interested in dance, the theatre and the related arts of music and design, and in particular, those planning to attend the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s Carmen. It will also suit students of arts and theatre and those interested in writing about dance.

By the end of this course, you will have:

- Compared and shared impressions from observation of a Royal New Zealand Ballet Company class
- Considered how to retain lively appreciation of dance performance through discussion and your own writing
- Enhanced your choreographic appreciation and enjoyment of attending a live performance.
