This two-day introductory electronic textile (e-textile) workshop is aimed at designers, educators, and crafters who would like to learn more about e-textiles and soft circuits. The course is intended to provide participants with the basic knowledge and tools to incorporate electronics and computing into their own creative and/or teaching practices.

Workshop presenters
Lara Galea is a current Bachelor of Creative Technologies student here at AUT University. Her interests include functional textiles and wearable technologies. Donna Cleveland is currently studying for her PhD, also within our Creative Technologies Department. Donna graduated as a Textile Designer and is now focussing her studies in the field of recycled waste materials.

Workshop content
This workshop is an introduction to e-textiles aimed to give participants an understanding of the basic principles of soft electronics. Participants will be introduced to a range of new materials and will explore how these materials can be manipulated to create soft, interactive systems using the Lilypad Arduino: a modular, sewable computer. By the end of the first day, participants will have the basic skills to design and program simple soft, interactive systems. These skills will then be applied to the design and development of a smart wearable accessory using the Textile and Design Lab's FeltLOOM on the second day of the course.

Learning outcomes
Have a greater understanding of e-textiles and soft circuits
Develop simple soft sensors and circuits using textile techniques
Have a greater awareness of new materials and how they might be used for soft, interactive systems
Program Arduino Lilypad microcontroller to create simple interactive systems
Be able to use the FeltLOOM to rapidly experiment and develop a smart felted accessory

Participant requirements
Participants should be comfortable handling and working with soft materials. Basic computer literacy is helpful but programming and electronics knowledge is not a prerequisite.

What to bring
Materials are provided but please bring refreshments and lunch with you.

Participants will be provided with a LilyPad Arduino Kit which they can take away with them. Participants may bring their own laptops if they would prefer to work on them. An email will be sent out before the course with instructions on how to download the necessary software. Participants who do not wish to bring their own laptop will be provided with a Mac laptop for the duration of the workshop.

The workshop will be held at the Colab studio on Level 10, WG Building, Corner of Mayoral Drive and Governor Fitzroy Place, Auckland City. If you require a map of the AUT Auckland City campus please go to
