Eve of Destruction Demolition Derby Plus Support Classes

Sat 18 Mar 2017, 5:00pm–9:30pm

Where: Central Motor Speedway, Sandflat Rd, Cromwell, Central Otago

Restrictions: All Ages

Otago Anniversary Weekend Saturday (March 18) from 5pm is the Eve of Destruction for a whole lot of 'passed their use-by dates' cars competing in the Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway annual Demolition Derby.

The last car running tournament of tortured metal, steaming radiators, huge crowd support, especially among young families, and happily exhausted drivers. For anyone prone to road rage entering an old dunga in this derby would seem to be a lifetime cure (entry form on the downloads page of this website).

Among an expected big turnout of spectators at least one man, the Cromwell Bulletin's Matt Barnett will be riding a roller coaster of emotions as he watches what was once the family's Holden Astra runabout being pummelled to a wretched end. Though, who knows, it might be the winner! Our track photographer Mark Mexted will be taking a break from shutter-bugging to metal-shunting in a car he has prepared specially for this demo derby.

Even before they start biffing each other, most cars competing in a demo derby look fairly knackered they have in fact gone through quite a process that includes chaining or welding shut doors, removing all glass and accessories, fitting a four or five point harness seat belt and installing a substantial roll bar.

Before the track becomes littered with body panels and auto parts there's proper, fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping, mud-kicking speedway entertainment with all classes racing... winged demon Sprintcars, methanol gulping Super Saloons, speedy Saloons, surprisingly fast V6 powered open wheeler Six Shooters, racy Productions and 1200cc Youth Ministocks driven with skill and gusto by 12 to 16-year-olds.

Plus there's a special treat with the return visit of Modified Sprints. Often called the ‘Winged Hornets of Speedway’, Modified Sprints don’t just sound fast, they have a real sting when it comes to speed, getting around Cromwell's 500-metre avocado-shaped track just a few seconds slower that their big brother 900hp Sprintcars.

Remember, too. Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway is 'The Fastest Family Show on Earth' where you can park on the natural amphitheatre to look down on track action from the comfort of your own vehicle. But to get a good spot be there for when the gates open at 3pm with racing starting at 5pm for a finish time that will get young speedway fans home to bed at a reasonable hour.

EFTPOS available at the gate.
