A touring display of unique quilts will be on display at Taupō Museum

Members of the national Aotearoa Quilters association have taken part in their tenth biennial challenge and twenty quilts have been chosen to tour the country with this exhibition ‘Flight’.

The quilts, all 75cm square were chosen from 62 entries, reflecting the theme Flight and interpreted in a traditional or contemporary design. Each region selected the 3 best quilts. An independent panel of judges then selected the twenty quilts to travel around New Zealand from May 2016 - May 2017.

“This exhibition of high-end quilts provides the public with an opportunity to view textile art at its best. The designs are diverse, featuring birds, planes and abstract ideas” exhibition convener Paula Cole said.

The quilting challenge was also a competition and was won by Jeanette Gillies from Wanaka with her entry, ‘Gone’ which is a strong image of a padlocked door, suggesting the inhabitants had gone.

All quilts are for sale but those who buy the quilts will not be able to take them home until after the exhibition completes its tour in May.

Taupō Museum is open seven days from 10am to 4:30pm. Entry is free to children and Taupō District residents with proof of address.
