Daryl File is an honours graduate from Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland University, tutored by such luminaries as Don Binney, Robert Ellis, Gretchen Albrecht and Garth Tapper.

He has been an exhibiting artist since 1976. His work is represented in private and national collections in New Zealand and overseas and he continues to exhibit throughout New Zealand. Daryl has taught art and art history for many years and was director of art studies at Scot’s College in Wellington for 6 years.

Flow Series:
The paintings in this exhibition are a collection of works that explore the dynamics of both water and plant form. Having lived by the coast in various parts of New Zealand over the last 40 years, it is inevitable that these themes dominate the core subject matter of the exhibition.

The beauty of nature, the mood of the ocean, tidal flow, horizon imagery are sources of natural inspiration.

The paintings are aesthetically dignified with a refined use of line and subtle use of form, tone and colour. Daryl has an intense love of rhythmic drawing with the intention of capitalising on flow. Other aspects of Daryl’s water related activity celebrate surfing, diving and swimming.

Multi-dimensional Works:
A passion for experimentation in multi-media allows freedom of expression in Daryl’s paintings and in the development of the two and three-dimensional work. These works are more an outlet for a fertile imagination, using the textures, shapes and impact of throw-away consumerism to create marquettes and assemblages of delight and intrigue.

Join Daryl for the opening of ‘Flow’ at 5-7pm, Friday 5 May. All welcome.
