Join sound-artist Paul Timings for an afternoon learning about the programming software MaxMSP, and creating your own generative-music patch.

This workshop will introduce and apply some beginner/intermediate concepts relating to musical programming languages, including how to make a sound, how to make an amplitude envelope for a sound, how to create rhythmic relationships between multiple sounds, how to make harmonic relationships between multiple sounds, and how to achieve rhythmically/harmonically interesting results.

Participants will be lead through the basics of generative music synthesis in MaxMSP – a process through which sounds can be synthesized and distributed by software based on probabilities set by the musician – ultimately creating their own patches.

Examples of the results achievable with these patches can be found here:

Attendees will need to bring a laptop with a free 30-day trial of Max7 installed as well as a set of headphones. Some headphones can be provided by the Audio Foundation.

Max7 can be downloaded for free here:

Numbers will be limited. To RSVP for this workshop, please email -
