Big workshop - 9.30.am.

Bryan Tolentino is one of the most beloved and respected ukulele players in Hawaii today, and we are thrilled to have him join us for our 5th Annual Geraldine Ukefest. A self-taught musician, Bryan is also a highly regarded ukulele instructor who takes the ‘give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day, teach him to fish, and he'll eat forever’ approach. In this hands-on workshop, you will gain a basic knowledge of the unique and distinctive Hawaiian sound - intros, outros, strums, etc. - at the same time as learning a traditional Hawaiian song or two. All skill levels

Workshop 4 - 11.30am-1pm. Note 4 becomes before 3 because this was an add-on. Choose either 4a or 4b.

4A: Hula Workshop Zilla Steele teaches Hawaiian hula, both traditional and modern, as an alternative form of gentle exercise. It improves rhythm, balance, co-ordination and confidence.

Dancers, you will learn one or two Hawaiian hulas, and a Tahitian drum otea. Wear socks, ballet shoes, soft-soled shoes (not sneakers) or bare feet. Dress-up in style with sarongs, long skirts or dresses, leis, and flowers. Ukulele players, if you’re not a dancer but would like to put your new Hawaiian skills into practice, join in the fun with chords and lyrics available to accompany the dancers.

4B: Singing Workshop Auckland singing coach Max Maxwell will focus on vocal confidence, breathing, pitch - and some tips on playing the ukulele and singing at the same time.

Workshop 3 - 4pm-5.30pm. Choose one only.

3A: Blues, boogie, ragtime Auckland’s Paul Jonson will teach you variable strumming techniques, finger-picking, and riffs and licks all with the realm and expression of 12-bar blues. Paul is an experienced performer and much sought-after ukulele workshop tutor. Intermediate skill level

3B: Syncopation Michael O’Reilly covers many syncopated strumming styles but is very fond of the old musical hall numbers made famous by the likes of George Formby. all skill levels

3C: Improvisation - Using familiar songs, Tony Hansen will help you explore the skills of improvisation using melody, chords and the spaces between notes and rhythm. Intermediate skill level
