Golden is Mary Hutchinson's fourth black and white Wellington Street Photography series. The images were made in the "Golden Mile" of Courtenay Place, Manners/Dixon Streets, lower Willis Street and Lambton Quay, between 2013-2017.

The exhibition depicts some of the public human diversity and activity observed in urban Wellington's busy retail, business and government-sector precincts. Here I find myriad contrasts between the exciting and the mundane; between wealth and poverty, and between the powerful and the disenfranchised.

The experience of connection is crucial to my photographic observations, composition and practice. I notice signage and graphic juxtapositions, the fall of light, and intriguing self and interpersonal expressions.

The images in Golden freeze moments of humour, pathos, art and irony. They tell the stories of workers, walkers, shoppers, commuters, and visitors in this distinctive area of Wellington.

Wellington Cathedral of St Paul is close to the northern end of the "Golden Mile" and I envisage that those who come to view the exhibition at will find its contemplative setting conducive to engaging with these images.

Mary is a Wellington based amateur photographer concentrating mainly on black and white street photography. She also enjoys portraiture, abstract, nature and landscape work, and has exhibited photos in Wellington galleries and published several photo-books of her work.
