“It’s all about food, flavours, fun, friends and family. It’s a celebration of Chinese cultural with free entertainment. It’s where you go to experience the very best global street food and Wellington’s favourite dining destination.”

Wellington Night Market and China Cultural Centre in New Zealand are teaming up to organise the “Happy Chinese New Year 2017” for the first time, to welcome the year of Rooster.

Happy Chinese New Year is a worldwide celebration hosted by the Ministry of Culture of the PRC and other Chinese authorities. Since 2009, a number of celebrations have been held overseas under the theme Happy Chinese New Year, engaging both overseas Chinese and citizens from all over the world.

The Ministry of Culture has launched the eighth Happy Chinese New Year for the year of the rooster. In 2016 over 2,100 programs were staged in 400 cities in 140 countries and regions. The activities featured traditional events such as temple fairs, parades, exhibitions, special performances and intangible cultural heritage displays.

This year, with the support of China Cultural Centre in New Zealand, we present you “Happy Chinese New Year Wellington Night Market Festival 2017”. On that day, Wellington Night Market will be transformed into a colourful and vibrant night from 5pm until 11pm to celebrate the Year of Rooster. This event celebrates the traditional Chinese spring festival. The event is expected to attract thousands of Wellingtonians to experience the sights, sounds, smells and pageantry of a traditional Chinese New Year celebration.

The event will feature the following activities:
- Grand Opening at 5pm with Suona horn and Chinese drum performance
- Entertainment programme includes Chinese cultural dance, Nunchaku martial arts workshop and Wellington local jazz band
- Chinese traditional handicrafts from northern China includes Chinese paper cuts, Chinese traditional Sugar Painting
- With 55 food stalls to provide the best global street food and flavours from anywhere and everywhere
