In their first concert for 2017, the Scholars Pro Musica present two works by Haydn: the Seven Last Words of Christ and the Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo, also known as the Kleine Orgelmesse (Little Organ Mass).

The Seven Last Words of Christ, commissioned for use on Good Friday, is a surprisingly serene telling of Christ's crucifixion. So great was Haydn’s fondness for this, his most profound work, that he arranged it into no fewer than four very different incarnations - a choral work, an orchestral work, a string quartet, and even a solo piano work.

The Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo was written around 1775 for the order of The Brothers of Mercy, whose patron saint was St. John of God. The nickname "Little Organ Mass" was given years later on account of the beautiful extended organ solo in the Benedictus, which was played by Haydn in the premier performance.

For this concert, the Scholars are delighted to welcome New Zealand organist, Janet Gibbs, and soloists Kate Spence (alto), Iain Tetley (tenor), Tavis Gravatt (bass) and the Scholars' own Regan McFarlane (soprano).
